CHAPTER 12

Walking out of the county jail, Della was mentally making a list of the new information she’d learned about Winston Malloy, and it came down to three very important things.

First was that he’d been involved in the illegal shipping of items that he supposedly didn’t know what they were. Two, he was doing it because he needed the money. That was clear from the third thing which was that he was giving someone named Terri money. Since that wasn’t his girlfriend, that only lead her to more questions than answers.

“But if he wasn’t a cheater, who was Terri?” she mumbled to herself once she was out the door and alone again. There were all these names of people she didn’t know, and it was starting to get frustrating.

If it had been a more recent murder, she would have tried to recreate Winston’s last days, but considering how long he’d been in the cave, she doubted anyone would remember what they were doing almost a decade ago. She knew she wouldn’t be able to tell anyone what she’d been doing that long ago, and she couldn’t expect someone else to, either.

As Della crossed the parking lot and headed to her truck, she heard her name being called. When she turned in the direction where the sound had come from, she saw it was Sheriff Metcalf.

“Jared!” she called out. The last thing she wanted to do was to run into Jared here in the jail parking lot. How was she going to explain this? Her mind scrambled. She thought she’d be able to slip in and out without being noticed. Why wasn’t he out on patrol or doing some office work?

“What are you doing here?” Jared asked as he drew closer. His eyes were suspicious as if he expected her to lie.

“How did you know I was here?” Della asked, avoiding his question. Why did she even have to answer his question? A tinge of irritation made her lift her chin and jut it out at him.

“Don’t you worry about that. I have my ways,” he said firmly, his brow lowered in irritation. “I had a feeling you were going to poke around in this case. You were in there talking to Nick Barkley, weren’t you?”

Once again she avoided his question. “So you know he’s linked to Winston Malloy?” she asked, a little surprised.

“Of course I do. What I want to know is why you’re talking to him when you aren’t an investigator?” He seemed to be getting irritated, so she knew she had to be honest or risk upsetting him further. She may not like being told what to do, but she didn’t want to step on the sheriff’s toes, either. She needed to tread very carefully in these treacherous waters.

“I found out that he and Winston were connected, and I came to talk to him about what might have led to him being in that cave,” she said. Della might have left out some of the other things she’d learned, but she wasn’t entirely sure that any of it led to anything.
